knitting it up in a big way

Monthly Archives: April 2010

one of my ideas for christmas (this last one) was to make two hats for princepessa. one to go with her yellow coat, and one for her red coat. considering i cast on for sunshine on christmas, i obviously did not make it.

but last week i found myself at a place where i’d just finished one project and none of my other projects were accessible to work on. so i randomly cast on 120 stitches without any real thought as to what it was going to be. once the ribbing was done, i chose a contrasting color, still playing with various ideas of how it would turn out. anyway, it became a selbu modern!

i keep meaning to make one as the original intends… but in the mean time, i really like the ones i make on 120 stitches, because they end up with stars on top!

the wee rolly brim was not there in the beginning (i cast on in the off white), but once i knew what it was, i decided it wanted a touch of contrast at the brim, so i picked up the stitches and knit a couple rows.

yeah, so:

pattern: selbu modern by kate gagnon osbourne
yarn: elsebeth lavold silky tweed, frogged from this, as well as mountain colors bearfoot in ruby river, same as soom’s duck duck goose
needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) for the brim, and US 6 (4.0 mm) for the body of the hat.
link to ravelry project page!

coming soon: jake’s lost socks! (gotta take some pictures of those… heh heh.)

spring is springing! it’s so nice to be able to throw open windows, and watch little green things unfurl.

randomly, mysteriously, i found myself casting on for another hat… and finishing it very quickly. there is no languishing period for hats, and i love that. anyhow, it’s blocking now:

bloomin garden

as are the lost socks. huzzah! soon some fo’s to show you.

this is the first spring at our new place, so it’s been interesting to see our various plantlife outside do new things. bushes that were bland since we moved here in late summer, have suddenly burst into bloom.

princepessa (aka zebraink over in ravelry) showing off her adorable new clapotis in front of our forsythia (did you know? they’re asian. just found that out.).

oh, my gosh… another week is gone, ALREADY?!

last night was my first eight hour sleep in… in… blurg, i’m not sure. i still feel like i have a kind of ‘busy weekend’ hangover. the house is very untidy (there are no clean mugs left), but at least there’s clean laundry. only as a result of multi tasking while visiting at the in-laws, though.

i’ve been on set for quite a few hours over the last two weeks. i have a small role in a friends project. there is a good amount of down time on sets, but it’s near impossible to get anything like work done in the down time. fortunately, it is ideal knitting time, and i am so. very. close! to having jake’s lost socks done!

lost socks

this pic is from a few days ago. both socks are now full length, plus ribbing. i just finished doing a tubular bind off on the first one (from this here tutorial) and it looks awesome! then ends and blocking! and a brand new FO! it has been far far too long since i last finished a project.

in fact, i’ve been feeling that for a while, so a couple of weeks ago, i grabbed some scraps of leftover yarn, cast on 90 stitches, and knit up a hat. i finished it in three days, but it has taken until now for me to document it, and get it to the blog. does that give you any idea of what my schedule is like?

bits & bobs hat

my bits & bobs hat (rav link)

needles: US 6’s (4.0 mm) for the 2×1 ribbing. US 8’s (5.0 mm) for the rest.
yarns:
(brim)
-queensland collection kathmandu aran (grey tweed leftover from buttoned down)
(stripes)
-kerry woolen mills aran (lighter of the two heathered greens)
-uknown dk weight alpaca blend (darker of the two heathered greens. if i had to guess, i’d say ultra alpaca light)
-dream in color smooshy held double, strange harvest (gold/green. leftover from strange harvest darkside cowl)
-knit picks elegance in redwood (warm brown. leftover from zoeโ€™s browncoat vest)
-queensland collection kathmandu dk (off white tweed from my porom)
-manos del uruguay (beige/pink, leftovers from one of juneberrystarโ€™s old old knits)

bits & bobs hat

i wasn’t entirely happy with the finished product. but it seems ridiculous to frog something that was just meant to be a quick knitting fix made out of scraps, for goodness sake. plus jake really likes it and he has claimed it.
