you may or may not already know this, but when jake and i first started dating, he lived in LA. that was nine years ago (we just celebrated* our together-versary! nine years! holy moly!). we were long distance for the first year and a half of our relationship. in that time, i went out to los angeles every couple of months (bonus: if you happen to be in a long distance relationship, may i recommend that you both live in or close to major hub cities**? it makes finding specials/cheap prices for flights much easier!).

we left chicago, all grey and brown and bare branches and blustery cold,and when we got to los angeles, everything was GREEN! everything was BLOOMING! sun was SHINING! i’d forgotten how much flora even the airport had! blooming vines growing up the sides of the parking structures, palm trees everywhere! it is it’s own kind of magic, that.

we tried this new thing to rent a car for a fraction of the price of the traditional car rental. this does mean that the car wasn’t waiting in a lot within a convenient distance of the airport, though. but i actually really like seeing the public transportation of a city. it can tell you a lot more about the feel of a place to see the public transportation.

union station was really lovely. we didn’t linger even a bit, except for this silly picture of me:

i can’t remember what jake said that made me look so hammy & super-hero-ish.

we walked from the subway station to pick up the car, which was mostly fine, except that we interpreted the distance as much shorter than it actually was, and in my excitement about the warm, sunny day, i put on my least appropriate shoes for walking, and ended up cultivating a few blisters which i spent the rest of the trip accommodating. tut.

we drove down ventura boulevard, one of jake’s favorites. it also happens to be home to one of my favorite LA restaurants, and one of my absolute favorite burgers of all time:

ahhhhh, mel’s drive ins sunset burger. i dream of you, here in the midwest, you darling specimen of the west coast. cheddar, bacon, and avocado atop a burger with sourdough toast. i recreate them at home very occasionally, but sourdough doesn’t move especially quickly in this household, so it’s fairly rare.

(other favorite burgers being benelux in milwaukee, and the third being the cheeseburger from olivia’s cafe in disney’s old key west. ahh, both were eaten after days with much walking, and prolonged hunger, which has never hurt the meal at the end of it.).

*and by celebrated, i mean we ate lunch at the only sit down restaurant in our terminal at the airport where we had an excess of time, and alerted each other of glorious views out of our airplane windows (we couldn’t get seats next to each other, so we opted for window seats in two consecutive rows), and clinked glasses of wine when we safely made it home that evening. it was pretty nice!

**because, you know, love is notorious for being convenient, timely, and taking requests.


a lone rose petal

i saw this lonesome rose petal hanging out by itself, and i found it terribly evocative. bruised and marooned a week after valentines, on the cold cold street. oh, you lovely thing.

fancy nails

my nails are awfully fancy right now. the old gold is s-age is just a number from sephora. anyone have any light to shed on that name? the lines (inspired by this pin) are just black sharpie, with a top coat dashed on top.

i pinned this grey striped button down from free people, and then later that evening jake and i watched shawshank redemption (so good), and their prison shirts were remarkably similar, so i thought maybe i ought to wear my grey striped shirt.

stack o' bracelets

i like that it has contrasting fabric inside. i always find that a nice touch. i put a little extra effort in via a stack of bracelets that jingled and jangled all day long.

clean slate cowl

my clean slate cowl has been getting a lot of wear since i finished it. i got the pin at the flea market, and immediately used it to pin the cowl closed, which makes it much warmer. i don’t know what such a gigantic industrial pin was used for, but i love it on my chunky cowl.

brussels sprouts!

those brussels sprouts. because they are one of the best recipes the internet has brought me. fast, delicious, healthy, cheap. we eat them close to once a week. we’ve modified them to add a slice or two of bacon (trader joes has this great turkey bacon. so good that it’s become out default bacon. less guilt, yo.) chopped up with the sprouts. and this time i had some broccoli left over from something else, so i chucked them in, and hey, why not a little onion, and it was so good with a little sriracha on top!

talk at me guys. any nails catching your fancy? spent more time wondering about the names of nail polishes than they probably merit recently? or lipstick. those usually have fun names, too. what’s the best recipe you’ve found on the internet?

jill & i went to renegade craft fair yesterday, where my eyes and head got filled up as quickly as my wallet emptied. it was fantastic, i love doing it, but whew! wear comfortable shoes and have a budget! we stopped at milk & honey for lunch, which is always delicious, but the ice cream sandwich (earl grey ice cream with citrus cookies) was maybe the best thing ever.

as you might have been able to tell… i lost some steam this week. i got sidetracked by some other projects (painting a ceiling, lending a hand as pops episode 6 inches closer to release, dogsitting), and unfortunately the remix got backseat a couple of times… but now i’m done! huzzah!

things i am already in danger of over-exposing: jeans (haha! as if that’s a surprise) and my seafoam cardigan. my hair was very confused by the water in our hotel, and as a result, i am very confused about the state of my hair.

i found the continuous shooting function on my camera this weekend and had a grand ole time with it. it’s a fantastic way to document some of the pretty views on a road trip. this is always one of my favorite drive by views in northern wisconsin.

i finally got to make a recipe i’ve been eying for quite some time now! broccoli parmesan fritters! with barbeque chicken. it was delish!

dinner! bangers and mash! with baked beans and beer! i forgot to take this picture right away, so i’d had one bite…

day 22- kitchen sink

my sink

you’ve seen it before, and you’ll see it again. i found that marble cutting board thrifting. i like that it adds a bit of luxe to the kitchen. before moving into this apartment, i’d never really had my own kitchen, as i was always sharing with my grandparents or roommates. it caught me by surprise just how much i love having a kitchen, collecting cooking tools or random kitchen-y things (i have a surplus of cream pitchers & sugar bowls. and salt & pepper shakers. and teapots.) i love thinking about use of the space, and the best layout, and making tiny improvements. and while i never minded cooking before, having a kitchen of my own really made me enjoy puttering around and cooking more. i still have a lot to learn about cooking, but i do much more, much better than i did before.

in other news, remember this hat that i made? and how i sent it to vanawesone? well, he just made a video that very heavily features the hat i made him! so… i’m sharing it with you guys!


bedside

my bedside. i dislike this lamp… but it works consistently, and that is more than i can say for my chosen bedside lamp. i recently pinned a lamp rewiring tutorial, so maybe i’ll give it a shot sometime and fix up my pretty lamp. i also love me some frack hack, but i also know myself well enough to know that it’s doubtful that the bed will stay in exactly the same spot…

other things about my bedside table: my father-in-law made the headboard and each of our bedside tables. i traded with a girl in my ceramics class for the little bowl.

i’ve been busy this weekend, doing things, fixing things, making things, but also drilling holes that didn’t work out, and making messes that will take a bit to clean up. bah humbug. but let’s focus on the positive, shall we?

but i made brussel sprouts with garlic, and jake fried up the eggs. recipe from nat the fat rat, and i hung this knife rack very successfully, though! slowly but surely, i’m buying us more counter space!

a little preppy today. wearing my old school colors (blue and gold). you couldn’t pay me to wear them when i was in school… but now i just really like the way they look together. the shirt is from the little boys section. i love it. i’ve been finding a reason to wear it like every other day.

curried lentil soup. pretty good. it was a tad bland. but i will make it again. with a few adjustments. maybe a spicy pepper, better curry powder, and more garlic. always more garlic. and the cornbread was a good complement.
